Harry the Historian Leaves Lasting Legacy | Calgary News

Calgary has lost one of its most passionate storytellers and historians — Harry Sanders, affectionately known as “Harry the Historian,” who passed away at 59 after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Drumheller with deep roots in Calgary’s past, Harry turned his love for history into a vibrant legacy: writing for the Calgary Sun, appearing on CBC Radio, authoring books on local landmarks, and mentoring countless history lovers. His curiosity spanned politics, cinema, and quirky roadside gems, while his warmth and ability to connect made him beloved across communities. From his role as Calgary’s Historian Laureate to his final survey of Marda Loop’s heritage, Harry’s impact echoes through every preserved story. He didn’t just document history — he made it alive, inspiring all who knew him to see Calgary with wonder and reverence.
