The numbers are in. 255 hate crimes in 2021. 244 in 2022. 187 in 2023. 174 in 2024. On paper that looks like progress. But in the same period organized hate and antigovernment groups in Alabama increased by 25 percent — including KKK chapters, neo-Confederate organizations, and neo-Nazi groups. Sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity are not protected under Alabama's hate crime law. Federal hate crime prevention funding is being cut.
