"Hate It Or Love It" | TP&C | Episode 117
from Think Pieces & Conversations Hosted by 8-LEFT-EARTH
Send us Fan Mail Street Fighter 6 proves that sometimes the smartest way to move a fighting game forward is knowing what NOT to leave behind. In Think Pieces & Conversations — Episode 117: “Hate It or Love It,” I break down what I believe is one of the biggest reasons Street Fighter has remained one of the most prestigious and successful fighting-game franchises in the world: Capcom remembers the melody. Street Fighter doesn’t simply erase everything that worked whenever a new generation begins. Capcom experiments, studies what players respond to, keeps the concepts that prove themselves, and then evolves those ideas into something new. We go back through: Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Street Fighter IV Street Fighter V Street Fighter 6 And we look at the design lineage connecting ideas like parries, EX and Overdrive moves, Focus Attack, FADC, V-Reversal, Drive Parry, Drive Impact, Drive Rush, and the larger philosophy behind how Capcom builds each new Street Fighter. These mechanics aren’t all the same. That’s the point. The question is whether Capcom has mastered something every fighting-game developer should understand: How do you innovate without throwing away the things your audience already proved they love? I also compare Street Fighter’s philosophy with Mortal Kombat, including the variation system from Mortal Kombat X and how that concept evolved through MK11 and Mortal Kombat 1. We get into Tekken 8, why Tekken may have the best opportunity to challenge Street Fighter at the top of the FGC, and what can happen when a fighting game pushes its design philosophy too far away from what its audience already understands. I even touch briefly on newer fighting games like Marvel Tokon and what future developers can learn from the franchises that have already survived multiple generations. This isn’t about saying Street Fighter has never made mistakes. It isn’t about pretending every Capcom mechanic is perfect. It’s about understanding why Street Fighter’s past continues to live inside its future. NetherRealm often reinvents the song. Capcom keeps remixing the melody. And Street Fighter 6 may be the clearest proof yet that sometimes the smartest innovation isn’t creating something completely unfamiliar. Sometimes it’s knowing exactly what deserves to survive. 🎙️ Think Pieces & Conversations — Episode 117 “Hate It or Love It” Let me know in the comments: Does Capcom understand fighting-game evolution better than its competition?
