But here's what's really amazing – he was also a nuclear physicist! That's right, he served as a nuclear engineer in the U.S. Navy's submarine program, working directly under the legendary Admiral Hyman Rickover. Talk about a diverse career path! Here's something remarkable – after leaving the White House, Carter didn't retire to a life of luxury. Instead, he and his wife Rosalynn devoted themselves to humanitarian work through the Carter Center. They helped build or renovate over 4,300 homes across 14 countries with Habitat for Humanity. Carter would often be right there swinging a hammer well into his 90s! And here's a fact that might surprise you – Carter was the first U.S. president born in a hospital! He was also the first president to be born after World War I. But perhaps most impressively, he holds the record for the longest post-presidency in American history – 42 years!
