Having A Disability Doesn't Mean You're Broken
from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney
Autism can look very different from one person to another. There’s a wide range of support needs across the autism spectrum. Some autistic individuals may live very independently, while others may require significant assistance with communication, daily routines, sensory regulation, employment, or other parts of everyday life. Terms like “high-functioning” and “low-functioning” are sometimes used to describe those differences, though they can oversimplify how complicated a person’s strengths and challenges really are. Someone may seem highly independent in one area while needing substantial support in another. Regardless of where someone falls on the spectrum, needing more or less support does not make them lesser as a person. It simply means that different people require different accommodations in order to function comfortably, communicate effectively, and have a fair opportunity to succeed. Understanding autism means looking beyond labels and paying attention to the individual. Support should be shaped around what a person actually needs—not around assumptions about what they should be able to handle. Everyone deserves dignity, respect, and access to the tools that help them live as well as possible. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #AutismSpectrum #SupportNeeds #AutismAcceptance #UnderstandingAutism #DisabilitySupport #Accessibility #Accommodations #AutisticAdults #AutisticChildren #Inclusion #Neurodivergent #YouTubeShorts
