Having a job like Rick Rubin has in the age of AI and learning how to dream again — Advice Session

Nobody teaches you how to want things. They teach you how to work, how to deliver, how to be useful, how to perform. And then one day, the tools get so powerful that the doing part is basically handled, and you're standing there realizing you spent years getting good at the wrong thing. I recorded an episode about that feeling. about what happens when you strip away all the excuses, and you're left with yourself and the question you've been avoiding. i talk about taste, which i think is just a quiet word for everything you've ever genuinely paid attention to in your life. and at the end there's an exercise that kind of changed something in me. you write down five completely different lives you would love to live and then you describe what a single tuesday looks like in each one. not your real life, not a realistic version. five totally different ones. a ceramicist on a Greek island, a filmmaker with a backpack, whatever makes your chest feel warm. And then you look at the details that keep showing up across all five. Those details are your real desires, wearing different costumes. i think most of us already know what we want. We just buried it under so many layers of obligation and comparison that we forgot it was there. This episode is me trying to dig it back up
