He blows the framework open. Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.We walk through the conversation carefully. Born anew — the word carrying both meanings: from above, and again. Nicodemus hears again and finds it absurd. Jesus presses the point: unless one is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. The wind blows where it wants to and you hear its sound but don't know where it comes from. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.Then the image from Numbers 21. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up — that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. The healing came by looking at the thing that was killing them, lifted up on a pole. The Son of Man must be lifted up in the same way. The crucifixion and the glorification are the same event seen from two angles.Then the verse. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Read slowly — because familiarity is the enemy of actually hearing what it says. The world that loved darkness. The world that did not receive him. That world. And the verse everyone misses: God didn't send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The primary purpose was salvation.
