“He is the Calm”

from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today Hosted by Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus

Sept. 20, 2026 Daily Devotional: “He is the Calm” Psalm 107:29 "He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed." To fully grasp the weight of this verse, you have to look at the verses just before it. Psalm 107 describes a group of seasoned sailors caught in a terrifying tempest. The waves are towering, their courage is melting away, and despite all their nautical expertise, the text says they were at their "wits' end." It was only when their own strength was entirely exhausted that they finally cried out to God. We often treat the storms in our lives much like those sailors. When chaos hits—a sudden health crisis, financial instability, or a fractured relationship—our first instinct is to grab the helm. We rely on our experience, our planning, and our intellect to steer our way out of the churning water. But some storms are simply too big for us to navigate. They are designed to bring us to the end of ourselves so we candiscover the beginning of God's power. Notice how God answers their desperate cry. He doesn't give them a stronger boat or better sailing techniques. He speaks directly to the chaos. The contrast here is breathtaking: the deafening roar of a raging sea is reduced to a mere whisper. God’s peace isn't just a psychological coping mechanism; it is an active, authoritative force that subdues the chaos around us and within us. When you feel like you are staggering and reeling in your current circumstances, you don't need to row harder. You need to invite the ultimate authority over the wind and waves into your boat, trusting that His presence alone is enough to hush the waters. Drop the oars and identify the specific situation right now where you are frantically trying to fix something beyond your control. Verbally admit to God,"I am at my wits' end with this." Seek the whisper within thechaos that thrives on noise. Turn off your phone, step away from distractions for five minutes today, and sit in absolute silence to let your mind physically quiet down. Finally, shift your focus, instead of obsessing over the size of the waves, meditate on the authority of the One who commands them.
