Welcome to the Daily Disciple Podcast, where we seek daily to be with and to become like Jesus, our teacher. Welcome to the Daily Disciple Podcast, Travis. And we are going to be in 1 Samuel chapter 16, and we're going to look at the famous story of David, the shepherd boy, being anointed as the king, like anointed as the Messiah, by Samuel the prophet. And it's an amazing story, and it's a powerful story.
And the title of the podcast is, He is the one. He is the one. And I just want to say that to anyone that is listening to this podcast, you are the one. And I am the one for this or that or whatever God has uniquely called me to.
And you are the one. And sometimes that's a phrase that's more difficult to hear than anything else, because life and people and wounds and failures and labels have a way of communicating, at least implicitly, but most of the time explicitly, you're not the one. You're not the one. You can't handle that, or you're not gifted enough for that, or you're not ready for that, or your failures in the past disqualify you from that, or where you come from, you know, what you did or what you didn't do.
And often life and people in our past, even our present, has a way of saying, you're not the one. And so sometimes we live out of that reality that we're not capable or ready or called. And if we can think about that just a little bit this morning, we will be able to enter into what David was experiencing in this story. And I think one of the things that we tend to forget, I mean, it's obvious, but I think we tend to forget it is that each character in Scripture is a normal person with past and wounding and family of origin issues and thoughts and fears and all the stuff that we struggle with, David struggled with.
And the story is about communicating to David, you are the one. And so maybe we could think for just a moment before we enter into the story, what has happened to you that has, in your mind, disqualified you? Or why are you not ready for this or that or the other? Who's standing against you?
Who are you comparing yourself to? How have you disqualified yourself? What label or wound or failure has defined you? And that is where David was in the midst of the story.
So the story begins in 1 Samuel chapter 16, and Samuel is told by God to go to Bethlehem and to anoint one of Jesse's sons as the king of Israel. Now, right off the bat, Bethlehem? David comes from Bethlehem? Can anything good come out of Bethlehem?
I mean, Saul came from Benjamin, you know, but Bethlehem is not where anybody would have expected the king to hail from. Yet that's where David comes from. And Samuel is sent to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse's sons to be king over Israel. And then in verse 6, when he arrives, Samuel sees Eliab.
Eliab, the oldest, right? Surely this is the Lord's anointed standing before the Lord. And Samuel goes to anoint Eliab. And God says, no, it's not him.
That's not my man. And so all of the sons are paraded before Samuel. And Samuel says to the father, Jesse, well, are these all your sons? Because the Lord's anointed is not here.
And then Jesse says in verse 11, no, these are not all of my sons. There's still the youngest, but he's tending the sheep. And what that means is that David wasn't even invited. He wasn't even invited to the party by his father.
Someone had to watch the sheep. And David was chosen to do that. So the prophet and Samuel, and Samuel was a big deal in the history of Israel. Samuel's coming to town and he wants to have a meal with Jesse and his sons.
And David doesn't even get the invite. He's not even there. And Samuel says to Jesse, the father, well, we're not going to sit down until he arrives. And it's such a great moment in verse 12 and 13 of this story.
So David finally enters into the feast. And it says that the Lord says to Samuel, rise and anoint him. And then here's the line at the end of verse 12. This is the one the Lord says to Samuel.
This is the one. He is the one. This is my man. This is my heart.
This is who I'm wanting you to anoint. This is the one I love verse 13. So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers. This, this young son that wasn't even invited to the party is anointed King in front of all of his brothers.
And the spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David at that moment. And this is incredible story. And it's all building to this line where the Lord says to Samuel, this is the one, he is the one, this is the King. And all kinds of things are against David believing that reality, not only where he came from, but comparing himself, I'm sure to Eliab, his older brother, who looked like the strapping tall King, you know, or the fact that his father wouldn't even consider inviting David to the meal.
And as we think about our lives, we can relate to all of those elements, all of those messages. Where have we come from? What's in our background. What's in our past.
What have we done? How have we failed or how have we not been prepared? What have we not done that really disqualifies us from being the one that's called to do whatever it is that God is wanting to anoint us to do. And that could be a venture that could be something that needs to be said in the world.
That could be raising amazing children, whatever it is that God has placed in front of us as the adventure of our lives. The message that God wants to communicate to David and wants to communicate to me and you is you are the one, you are the one. And then that horn of oil, that anointing oil is poured out and commissions us to the task ahead. There's always going to be an Eliab in our lives.
There's always going to be someone that we're going to be comparing ourselves to. And when they're in our view, we feel like we don't measure up in this way or in that way. There's always going to be an Eliab. An Eliab always sends a message to us.
You're not ready. You're not capable. You're not the one because look at her, look at him, look at what they have. Look how capable or competent they are.
There's always going to be an Eliab in our lives. And there's always going to be people that don't invite us to the party. There's always going to be people that don't think we're equipped or worthy enough to be there. There's always going to be people that are going to wound us.
There's always going to be people that are going to label us. And the enemy is behind all of this trying to communicate to each one of us. You are not the one. You are not equipped.
You are not ready. You have not been called to this. And that's why the story is so, so profound. Despite all of these elements, despite the lack of invite, despite where David hails from, despite the older brother looking like the clear choice to the prophet, despite all the woundings and all the barriers, God gets his word to David.
And I love that line. As soon as David walks in, the Lord says to Samuel in the verse 12, this is the one. This is the one. He is the one.
I am the one. You are the one. And that is the message that God wants to communicate to us today as daily disciples. Thanks for listening to the Daily Disciple Podcast.
