JapaneseFantasy *#Onmyoji* Series — Spells, Spirits, and the Question of Curses

【English Version】 "Not only things that have form — even things invisible to the eye are bound by the spell of a name." ― Abe no Seimei / Onmyoji Hey, thanks for tuning in. I'm Mako, your movie talk host. This episode covers the #Onmyoji series ( #陰陽師 ) 🌙 Based on Baku Yumemakura's novels and starring Noh and Kyogen master Nomura Mansai as the enigmatic Abe no Seimei — the 2001 original and its 2003 sequel are cornerstones of Japanese fantasy cinema. Set in the Heian-era capital, where spells and spirits lurk around every corner. It all started with a question: "Does a curse actually exist?" But the more you watch, the clearer it becomes. A curse is what happens when human emotion — hatred, resentment, obsession — takes on a shape. And if that's the case… well, it exists, doesn't it 🌀 Nomura Mansai's sheer presence commanding every scene. Sanada Hiroyuki as a genuinely menacing villain. And those spellbinding ritual battle sequences. This episode covers both films as a pair. "Does a curse exist?" — come think it through with me. Podcaster Mako (@_macobana) started out spilling all the movie thoughts that couldn't fit on a solo talk show called #Yomoyamakobanashi (#まこばな) — and now that movie talk has its own dedicated channel. There's never a shortage of films worth talking about! New episodes drop weekly or bi-weekly. Share your thoughts on Twitter with #リルパル #ReelPal — your tweets might get featured on the show!
