Catherine runs Blossom Piano Studios, where she teaches remote private piano lessons to around 28 students weekly, including adults who can take lessons during lunch breaks.
Catherine expresses her lifelong passion for music and teaching, starting from a young age, and we discuss how teaching online allowed her to continue sharing the joy of music during the Pandemic.
Catherine and Rebecca discuss the healing and therapeutic properties of music. We emphasize the value of music as a form of self-care and its ability to reach parts of the heart and soul that other experiences may not be able to touch. We share personal experience with the piano and how it has brought a sense of gratitude and connection with self and family. We both agree that music is a crucial part of childhood growth and development and continues to be beneficial throughout adulthood.
Catherine created a journal called "Notes to Self" to help adults develop mindful and consistent practice habits. The journal prompts users to set daily intentions, plan practice sessions, and celebrate accomplishments. It aims to shift the mindset towards intentional practice in short bursts and finding joy in the process of learning new skills. The journal provides structure while encouraging self-reflection and a sense of achievement.
Catherine and Rebecca discuss the importance of focusing on personal progress and celebrating achievements, rather than dwelling on shortcomings. Catherine shares her approach to teaching piano, emphasizing the need for students to reflect on their own progress and feel empowered to make improvements. Rebecca agrees, highlighting the value of having a clear focus and a structured approach when learning new skills. We stress the importance of practice and repetition, and how these can be made enjoyable and effective.
