Healing Waters

from The voices of rural Mayo · host Chalk & Cheese Productions

An audio documentary about a holy well in the west of Ireland, whose waters are said to cure ailments of the eye. From pagan times to Christianity, the faithful have gathered to worship at “Tober Mhuire” or “Mary’s Well”, as they do in this recording of Stations performed barefoot in chilly rain on Mary’s Day, August 15th, 2008. The picturesque site deep in rural north Mayo overlooks the Moy River and Killala Bay, a stone’s throw from the abandoned 15th century friary of Rosserk. Until recently, it was known only to locals, who would tramp through fields and step over stone walls to attend outdoor mass celebrated at the well. Now a wide, easy walking path and car park have opened up the mysterious peace of this spring to contemplation by visitors and pilgrims from beyond the local villages. reporting by Julia Fitzgerald length: 1 hour first broadcast: Claremorris Community Radio, Sept. 2008 copyright: © 2008 Julia Fitzgerald
