Working out your calves supports the ankle joint reducing sprains and eliminating issues such as shin splints and Achilles tendonitis. Strong calves help with improving speed and vertical performance during walking, running and jumping. In addition, strong calves increase calf strength and improve balance and stability which is helpful for climbing and walking on uneven surfaces. Consistent training increases size and definition of the muscles as well as enhancing lower-body endurance. Calf exercises act as a "second pump" for the heart, pushing blood back up from the legs, which is key for reducing swelling and improving cardiovascular health. Examples of calf exercises are standing calf raises, seated calf raises and slow calf raises.
