Commonly known as “the silent killer,” high blood pressure is a chronic condition that has greatly impacted a lot of people. Causes of high blood pressure include an unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, stress and smoking. If high blood pressure is left untreated, it can lead to conditions such as heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, heart failure and kidney damage. To maintain normal blood pressure, levels must be 120/80, acquiring a healthy diet focusing on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein such as turkey, chicken, seafood, beef and pork as well as low-fat dairy such as Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. When eaten in moderation, eggs are another great source of protein. In addition, plant-based options such as lentils, chickpeas, black beans provide a rich source of fiber. Other ways of maintaining normal blood pressure include regular exercise, weight management, no smoking, limited consumption of alcohol, getting seven to nine hours of sleep, meditation, yoga, deep breathing and tracking your readings with a blood pressure monitor.
