Soursop is a fruit that cannot be ignored. The fruit is native to South America and can be found in the United States at specialty grocery stores specifically international markets. Despite its tough exterior, the inside of a soursop has sweet white pulp that is smooth and creamy with large black seeds. Some have said that the taste is a blend of strawberries and apples. Because of its benefits and nutrients, soursop is considered a superfood. The fruit contains Vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. Soursop has been used by traditional healers for its medicinal purposes using not only the fruit but its leaves and stems to treat illnesses including killing cancer cells. The antioxidants found in the fruit may help fight free radicals and keep your cells healthy. Free radicals lead to illnesses such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Soursop has antibacterial properties that may help kill bacteria such as tooth decay, gingivitis and yeast infections. The fruit may help manage high blood pressure. One study showed that over a three-month period people who drank seven ounces of soursop juice everyday had lower blood pressure than a control group. Research has shown that soursop could help with managing diabetes. Certain enzymes in the fruit may break down carbohydrates to slow how quickly your body absorbs sugar. Soursop contains a huge amount of fiber which is key for digestive health, regulating blood sugar and lowering cholesterol. If you’re looking to give your taste buds something new, try soursop whether as a fresh fruit or to sip as a tea.
