Cherimoya is a fruit that must be tried by everyone. The fruit is native to mountainous regions of Honduras and Guatemala with a long history of being grown in the Andes mountains and Central America. In addition to Central America, the fruit is grown in tropical and subtropical regions throughout South America, southern California, South Asia, Australia, the Mediterranean region, and North Africa. Writer Mark Twain called the cherimoya "the most delicious fruit known to men.” The fruit can be purchased in the United States at international grocery stores or online at various tropical fruit outlets. The fruit is shaped like a heart with a tough exterior. While the inside of a soursop has sweet white pulp that is smooth and creamy with large black seeds and its taste being a blend of strawberries and apples, the cherimoya contains white, sweet flesh with large black seeds and its taste being a blend of banana, pineapple, and vanilla. Because of its creamy, custard taste, the fruit is also known as custard apple. Because of its benefits and nutrients, cherimoya is considered a superfood. The antioxidants found in the fruit help fight free radicals which could boost eye health, reduce your risk of heart disease and prevent cancer. The fruit contains magnesium and potassium which help regulate blood pressure. Cherimoya contains a huge amount of fiber which is key for digestive health. The fruit contains a high amount of Vitamin C which supports a strong immune system needed to fight infections and disease. If you want to try something new, be sure to consider cherimoya whether as a fresh fruit or mixed into a yogurt or smoothie.
