Guava is a tropical fruit native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, northern South America, subtropical and tropical Asia, parts of the United States specifically Florida and Hawaii, southwestern Europe specifically Greece and the Costa del Sol on Málaga in Spain, tropical Africa and Oceania. Currently, India is the world’s leading producer of the fruit followed by Indonesia and China. Guavas can either be round or oval and have a smell similar to a lemon rind. The outer skin is rough, often with a bitter taste and can be soft and sweet. Depending on the type, the thickness of guava skin is green before maturity, and can be maroon, yellow, or yellow-green when ripe. The pulp inside the fruit ranges from sweet or sour and off-white in white guavas to deep pink in red guavas. Ripe, soft guavas have a sweet, fragrant, and creamy texture. Guava can be eaten fresh, with skin included by washing it and biting it, you can slice it in half and scoop out the pulp with a spoon. In addition, you have the option of either eating the seeds or removing them. The fruit can be purchased in the United States at grocery stores, farmers markets, international markets or online at various tropical fruit outlets. Due to its outstanding health benefits, guava is considered a superfood. Some studies have shown that eating guava can improve blood sugar. Potassium and soluble fiber contained in guavas can improve heart health by lowering blood pressure, as well as lowering your risk for heart disease and decreasing bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol. In addition, it benefits your digestive system aiding in healthy bowel movements and preventing constipation as well as being beneficial for your gut. With it being low in calories, guavas are a weight-loss-friendly food. Due to its high levels of antioxidants like lycopene and quercetin, eating guava may help prevent cancer. Guava contains a high amount of Vitamin C which helps to maintain your immune system and strengthens your defense against infections and reduces the duration of illnesses.
