Guava is a tropical fruit native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, northern South America, subtropical and tropical Asia, parts of the United States specifically Florida and Hawaii, southwestern Europe specifically Greece and the Costa del Sol on Málaga in Spain, tropical Africa and Oceania. Currently, India is the world’s leading producer of the fruit followed by Indonesia and China. Guavas can either be round or oval and have a smell similar to a lemon rind. The outer skin is rough, often with a bitter taste and can be soft and sweet. Depending on the type, the thickness of guava skin is green before maturity, and can be maroon, yellow, or yellow-green when ripe. The pulp inside the fruit ranges from sweet or sour and off-white in white guavas to deep pink in red guavas. Ripe, soft guavas have a sweet, fragrant, and creamy texture. Guava can be eaten fresh, with skin included by washing it and biting it, you can slice it in half and scoop out the pulp with a spoon. In addition, you have the option of either eating the seeds or removing them. The fruit can be purchased in the United States at grocery stores, farmers markets, international markets or online at various tropical fruit outlets.
