Track and field is celebrated and respected worldwide as a premier sport. One of the disciplines of track and field is the mile. The mile run is a middle distance race whose origins began in England. The race would achieve significance and forever be cemented by Roger Bannister. On May 6th, 1954, during a meet between the British Amateur Athletics Association and Oxford University at Iffley Road Track in Oxford, England Bannister alongside Christopher Chataway and Chris Brasher who provided pacing for Bannister's run would reach an amazing feat. Bannister became the first athlete to finish the mile in under four minutes. Bannister’s exact time was three minutes and 59.4 seconds. Bannister’s record would last only 46 days as the record would be broken by his rival, Australian John Landy. Landy broke the record at a race in Turku, Finland, with a time of 3 minutes and 58 seconds. On August 7th, 1954, at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Bannister and Landy went head-to-head in a race known as "The Miracle Mile". This race was significant because these were the only two men in the world to have broken the 4-minute barrier, with Landy still being the world record holder. Despite Landy leading for most of the race, things would suddenly change. A key moment in the race occurred when Bannister tried to pass Landy when Landy looked over his left shoulder to gauge Bannister's position and Bannister’s late burst past him on the right, never giving up the lead. Since Bannister and Landy, the mile run has taken on a life of its own with races such as the Wanamaker Mile, Dream Mile, Emsley Carr Mile and Bowerman Mile. The health benefits of running a mile include improved cardiovascular health, weight management, increased bone density, enhanced muscle strength and endurance, strengthened immune system, increased cognitive function, reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved gut health and increased longevity. To this day, the mile run remains a key feature of many track and field meetings, whether high school, collegiate or recreational. Running the mile is enjoyed by athletes and enthusiasts worldwide providing a great sense of fitness and community.
