Yahweh’s Request God commands Saul, through the prophet Samuel, to completely destroy the Amalekites as an act of divine justice. The Amalekites’ history of opposing Israel goes back to the time of Moses (Exodus 17, Deuteronomy 25). This was a test of Saul’s obedience—an opportunity for redemption after his earlier failure in 1 Samuel 13.2. Saul’s Response Saul partially obeys by defeating the Amalekites but spares King Agag and the best livestock. He justifies his actions by claiming the people spared the livestock to offer sacrifices to God. Samuel confronts Saul, exposing his rationalization of disobedience and failure to take responsibility. “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22) – God desires our full surrender, not half-measures.3. Saul’s Rejection Because of his continued disobedience, God rejects Saul as king and declares David as his eventual successor. Saul repeatedly refers to Yahweh as “your God” (Samuel’s God), indicating a heart that has drifted away. Unlike David, who will also fail but will return to God in repentance, Saul’s heart remains hardened. Samuel mourns Saul’s downfall, but God’s justice prevails.
