Hebrews 7: The Priest Who Lives Forever — Melchizedek, The Change In The Law, And Saved To The Uttermost

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through Hebrews Chapter 7 — the theological center of the letter, where the Melchizedek argument planted in Chapter 5 and anchored in Chapter 6 finally unfolds completely.The chapter opens with the argument from the tithe. Melchizedek received tithes from Abraham — the father of the nation, the one who held the promises. The lesser is blessed by the greater. And Levi — the ancestor of the entire Levitical priesthood — was in the body of Abraham when this happened. Which means the entire Levitical priesthood, in the person of its own ancestor, paid tribute to the order that supersedes it.Then the argument from imperfection. If the Levitical priesthood had produced perfection, what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek? The very existence of Psalm 110:4 is proof the existing system was incomplete. For the law made nothing perfect. And when the priesthood changes, the law necessarily changes with it.Then the argument about Jesus being from Judah — not Levi. Rather than being a problem for his priesthood, this is proof that his priesthood operates on a completely different basis. Not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life.Then the oath. The Levitical priests were appointed without an oath. Jesus was appointed with one — the Lord swore and will not change his mind, you are a priest forever. By so much, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.And the conclusion the whole chapter has been building toward. Many priests have been made, because they are hindered from continuing by death. But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable. Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.To the uttermost.
