Hebrews 9: Into Heaven Itself — The Earthly Tabernacle, The Blood Of Christ, And The Three Appearances

In this episode of Bible Chapter by Chapter, we walk verse by verse through Hebrews Chapter 9 — the chapter where the entire argument of the letter arrives at its most direct and precise statement.The chapter opens with the earthly tabernacle — its furnishings, its two rooms, and the crucial restriction: into the second, only the high priest, once a year, not without blood. The Holy Spirit was indicating something through that restriction. The gifts and sacrifices offered there were incapable of making the worshiper perfect as touching the conscience. Incapable by nature. The blood of animals could cleanse externally. It could not reach the conscience — the interior place where guilt actually lives.Then the contrast. Christ having come as high priest of the coming good things — through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands — not through the blood of goats and calves but through his own blood — entered in once for all into the Holy Place, having obtained eternal redemption. And the lesser-to-greater argument: if the blood of goats and bulls sanctifies to the cleanness of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?Then the three appearances that frame the whole chapter. The past once: now at the end of the ages he has been revealed to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. The present: he has entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. The future: Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time — without sin — to those who are eagerly waiting for him for salvation.Once. That word runs through this chapter like a pulse. The repetition of the earthly sacrifice was implicit testimony to its insufficiency.
