Hecate: The Complete Story of the Goddess of Witchcraft, Crossroads and Ghosts | Greek Mythology for SleepA slow, quiet retelling of the story of Hecate, made for falling asleep to.She is the odd one out. Not an Olympian, older than most of them, and the only figure from the previous generation that the new gods didn't strip of anything — she kept her share of the earth, the sea and the sky, and nobody seems to have argued about it. That alone makes her worth a couple of hours. The story runs through the places where things meet. She holds torches and turns up at night. She was the only one who heard a girl being taken underground and the only one willing to say so, and she stayed on afterwards as company for the queen who came out of that. She belongs to crossroads, to doorways, to the last night of the month, and to the dogs that bark at nothing. Households left food out for her where three roads met, and nobody quite admitted to doing it. Later she gets attached to witchcraft, to a sorceress on an island and another in a kingdom at the end of the sea, and the version most people know now — three faces, three directions, the moon — is largely something the Romans and everyone after them built on top of a much older and quieter goddess who mostly guarded thresholds. The recording itself is the usual thing. A low, even voice, no music, no sound effects, nothing that rises or drops or suddenly arrives. Nothing in it is built to unsettle you, whatever the subject sounds like. It's slow enough that following along stops feeling necessary somewhere in the first twenty minutes. If you drift off at one crossroads and surface at another, that's the intended use. Most people don't make it past the first half hour, and the rest will still be here tomorrow night.Put it on, turn the volume down, and let it go on without you.Mythology & Folklore for Sleep — long, calm retellings of Greek myths, Norse legends, Egyptian tales, Hindu epics, Chinese classics and old folklore from around the world, made for insomnia and the hours when you can't sleep. Bedtime stories for adults, told in a slow, quiet voice. New episodes every day.
