HEIDI STOBER as Daphne

from Seattle Opera Podcasts Hosted by Seattle Opera

American soprano Heidi Stober made her Seattle Opera (and role!) debut as Daphne in our January 2026 concert presentation of Strauss’s beautifully ‘green’ opera. In her entrance aria she sings of her love for a tree outside her home: “Oh, how gladly would I stay with you, beloved tree…they planted you when I was a child. So you’re my brother. When day abandons me—when Apollo, great god of the sun goes home to his divine palace atop Mount Olympus—I turn to you. In the dark I seek the protection of your arms. I embrace you, I caress you. And you whisper to me...as the evening breeze swells, I hear you singing, of the splendid sunshine which your leaves drank all day, of the strength your roots sipped from their mother the earth. Your song means so much more to me than the songs of men, beloved tree.” David Afkham conducted violin soloist Emerson Millard with the orchestra of Seattle Opera. Photo by Sunny Martini.
