Hellfire

from Suspense - Radio’s Outstanding Theater of Thrills · host OTR.FM Network

Originally Aired: September 28, 1953 Suspense #519, "Hellfire," wildcatter Wally Drake faces mounting pressure from investors as he drills his eighth dry hole in pursuit of oil. Lead investor McLean arrives with petroleum engineer Hotchkiss to scrutinize Drake's operation and question his expensive preparations, including pre-built storage tanks for oil not yet found. Just as the confrontation reaches its peak, Drake's crew breaks through to oil sand, vindicating his instincts and transforming the skeptical investors into believers. The discovery promises nearly 10,000 barrels a day, and Drake finally allows himself to relax after weeks of grueling work. But as Drake prepares reports for the jubilant stockholders and his wife Dottie celebrates their newfound wealth, disaster strikes without warning. The well explodes into flames during the final valve operation, engulfing crew member Big Steve and threatening to destroy everything Drake has worked for. As the hellfire roars, Drake must confront a catastrophe that could turn his greatest triumph into his worst nightmare.
