Hello Movies, My Old Friend: Episode 105 - Awakenings

It's a fresh month here at HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND and that means Ray and Rob are back with a brand new (old) movie from their childhood to re-evaluate and see if it still holds up! For this month's episode, they have chosen the 1990 drama AWAKENINGS starring the late/great Robin Williams (TOYS, MRS DOUBTFIRE) , Robert De Niro (RAGING BULL, TAXI DRIVER) and Julie Kavner (THE SIMPSONS).  This Academy Award nominee centers on Dr. Malcom Sayer, a introverted lab physician who takes a job at a local hospital in The Bronx where he oversees the care of catatonic patients who seem forgotten by the outside world. When the mystery of their condition sends Dr Sayer on a quest for a cure, he stumbles on a miracle drug that awakens his entire ward. This powerful film dissects the nature of time and what it means to those who have it and those who've lost it, the joy of the reclamation of it and the tragedy in the reality of the cure.  Will the grown up themes of this movie still ring true as it once did when they were kids? Or will it feel like an aged museum piece from a specific pocket of their shared history.
