HelloTomDyer Recap 9 : Volunteers Week
from The HelloTomDyer Podcast Hosted by HelloTomDyer
I owe what I do to my time spent as a volunteer with Pembrokeshire Citizens Advice Bureau (now Pembrokeshire Citizens Advice) after I graduated university. I now lead a team of 30 volunteers for Tenovus Cancer Care’s ACTivate Your Life - Affected By Cancer service. If you want to gain insight into a career or want to get your foot into the door, volunteer. Particularly in smaller organisations you may have the opportunity to take on more than you would in a traditional employment set up, so for it. Follow that passion and work for free. Listening to many podcasts from business types it’s clear that they all feel the same way. Find what value you can bring someone, provide it for free, the return will be greater than the effort you put in. The value I thought I could bring to Citizens Advice was time, commitment, technologically minded and enthusiasm for law and a willingness to learn. I’ve advised thousands of people since and was offered my first legal job there. The rest, as they say, is history. Tenovus Cancer Carr holds their annual Volunteer Awards in July 11th 2019 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. ACTivate Your Life Course Presenters are nominated in the Group category and one of them has been shortlisted for the Supportive award. ACTivate Your Life - Affected By Cancer would not have benefitted more than 100 people in its first year without them. Thank you volunteers. #VolunteersWeek2019
