Helmet at Ground Zero | Miami News

Retired Miami-Dade Fire Captain Gabe Nemeth clings to his helmet from 9/11, a relic from his time with Florida Task Force One at Ground Zero. Alongside Chief Carlos Castillo—whose team lost friend and fellow firefighter Ray Downey—their memories of that day still burn bright: the smoke, the silence, the crushing grief. At Station Three, Chief Eduardo Trapero keeps “Big Red,” a memorial truck honoring all who perished, and wears a “Never Forget” wristband as a daily tribute. A piece of WTC steel outside the station stands as a living link between Miami and the tragedy of September 11, 2001—a day etched in their souls, never forgotten.
