Henry's Last Night
from Henry’s Last Night · host Kathleen Hancock
This is the trailer for Henry's Last Night, a 4-part investigative memoir. Before dawn on November 25th, 1957, four airmen left Charleston Air Force Base in a storm. Seven miles up Highway 52, the car left the road. Two men died — including a nineteen-year-old newlywed named Henry Joshua Hancock. His daughter was born two months later, into the silence that followed. The physical facts are documented and undisputed: four airmen left the base after midnight, on duty, in heavy rain. A truck driver named H.L. Kelly watched their car pass him at ninety to a hundred miles an hour, then saw the taillights disappear. What isn't documented is what happened in the minutes before that — when the car stopped on the shoulder, for reasons no record explains. This series runs two threads at once: what the record shows about that night in 1957, and what it took — decades of fragments, a 1990 newspaper xerox, a 2009 return to Charleston, and finally digitized archives — to ask the question institutional silence was built to close.
