She previously was the first female to be appointed as Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Natural Resources, during which time, she led bans on rhino horns and plastic bags. Before that, she earned a BS in geology from St Lawrence University in New York, a Master of Science degree in petroleum geology from Acadia University, and a PhD in energy resources management from Pennsylvania State University.
