Hermann Florstedt: Brutal Nazi Commandant of the Majdanek Death Camp

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Hermann Florstedt was a brutal SS officer who commanded the Majdanek concentration and extermination camp, where tens of thousands of prisoners were murdered during the Holocaust. Born in 1895 in Bitche, then part of the German Empire, he served in the First World War and later joined the nationalist Stahlhelm organization before becoming a member of the Nazi Party and the SS in the early 1930s.From the beginning of Nazi rule, Florstedt was involved in political violence, including participation in the 1933 "Eisleben Bloody Sunday" attack against political opponents. His career in the concentration camp system began at Buchenwald, where his cruelty quickly became evident. Described as arrogant and volatile, Florstedt encouraged kapos to kill prisoners and personally abused inmates. He was temporarily transferred to Sachsenhausen, where he continued to build a reputation for brutality. Returning to Buchenwald, he rose to deputy commandant and became closely associated with Ilse Koch, wife of the camp commandant Karl Otto Koch.In late 1942, Florstedt was appointed commandant of the Majdanek concentration and extermination camp in occupied Poland. During his tenure, mass murder operations using Zyklon B intensified, and tens of thousands of Jews were killed in gas chambers or through starvation, forced labour, and disease. Majdanek became one of the most notorious killing sites of the Holocaust.Despite being proposed for promotion by Odilo Globocnik, Florstedt's career collapsed when he was arrested in 1943 during an SS corruption investigation involving Karl Otto Koch. Charged with embezzlement and the arbitrary murder of prisoners, he was convicted by an SS court and sentenced to death. Accounts differ regarding his final fate, but he was reportedly executed by the SS in April 1945 as the Third Reich collapsed.Florstedt's life stands as a stark example of ideological fanaticism, personal brutality, and the internal corruption that plagued the Nazi concentration camp system. This episode is part of the series The Nazi Camp Commandants.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
