The man in your life who is working constantly, pushing himself impossibly hard, providing at a level that seems to go beyond what anyone actually asked for, he's doing it because he believes, somewhere underneath all of it, that your love depends on it. That if he stops performing at that level, something important will be lost. He's not doing it for the career or the status or even the money. He's doing it to earn a place that was never actually conditional on any of those things.
