Seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren prägt er die türkische Politik: Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Zuerst war er Regierungschef, am 12. August 2014 wurde er zum ersten Mal als Präsident gewählt. Schon im Vorfeld der Wahl hatte er angekündigt, dass er das Präsidentenamt mit mehr Macht ausstatten würde.
