Welcome to the Tweet Trends podcast. Hey, Evette, what's trending today? Hey, I'm Evette, hey girl! And you are tuned in to Tweet Trends.
It's the quickest way to find out what's trending today. Today is International Day of Older Persons. Let's get started. Do you remember when you were a kid?
And somebody maybe said, Oh, well, did you know that your uncle so-and-so is 30 years old? And you thought to yourself like, oh my gosh, 30. He's ancient. And then you reach 30 and realize what in the world was I thinking, how come nobody told me that 30 wasn't old?
Well, today being International Day of Older Persons, I wanted to kind of shed some light on on this whole situation about being old. Now, there are a lot of people, women, especially that have a problem with getting older. But the ironic thing about the whole situation is that if you're getting older, guess what that means? You're still here.
You're still alive. If you're not getting older, then you're not here. You're dead. It's over.
Time has stopped for you. So let's stop looking at being older, looking older as being something really bad. I know that society, especially the media, has this thing where you've got to look young, you've got to look good, you've got to be competing with these 20-year-olds. But guess what?
30s, 40s, and 50s and so ons? You can't. There's no way, no how, that you can compete with a 20-year-old. Stay in your lane.
Enjoy your age. Now I get it if you don't like gray hair and you don't like what it looks like on you, that's fine. You can dye your hair. Easy, easy day, right?
But stop loathing the idea of getting older. It's not so bad. There are actually some good things about getting older. So let's talk about those.
Okay, so I had to do a little research and I found an article that gave four reasons why you should embrace aging. Now I'm not saying that there are only four reasons out there but this particular article gave four and I'm gonna run with that. So to start with, the world is getting much older. So guess what?
You're not doing it alone. You're doing it with everybody else in the entire world. Almost 900 million people in the world are at the age of 60. And then by 2050, two billion people or 22% of the planet's population will be 60 years old.
In fact, by 2050, for the first time in human history, there will be more people over 60 than there are children in the world. That sounds absolutely crazy. But these are the projections according to what they're seeing happening now. And so what does that mean?
That means that you are not out here growing old by yourself. It's a whole gang of other people out here growing old too. So stop your whining and complaining and get over it and just learn to love it. Accept the new you, that new chapter of you, every time you get an eight year older.
Embrace that because pretty soon 60 is gonna be the new 30. You know? So the next thing that they said is that longevity is becoming commonplace. Now the life expectancy rose from 46 to 68 years between 1950 and 2010.
And it's expected to rise to 81 by the end of the century. You remember when Prince was singing about that? He said the young soul educated didn't ever grow old. That's basically that.
He was talking about all of us, you know, with all of the advances in technology that we're able to keep people alive longer and therefore the older population is going to just get larger and larger over time. And you're gonna be in that. You're gonna be in the in crowd. So once again, embrace that.
Happiness. According to a recent study, most people are happiest in their youth and then once they reach their 70s and 80s, most people reported that they were the least happy in middle age. Now I don't know about this youth part about being happy because youth go through a gang of mess. But basically what they're saying is that middle age period is that's your roller coaster years.
You have your highs, your lows, your highs, your lows. But by the time you get to be 70 and 80 years old, guess what? You have graduated and you are at that point in life where you can say what you wanna say, act how you wanna act, do what you wanna do. And people will be like, oh, just leave granny alone.
You know, she does that. And nobody's gonna say anything to you. Doesn't that sound great? You get free rain.
You can act how you wanna act as straight donkey you can. Cause you earned that. You've been on the earth long enough. But yes, you have earned that right to act a straight donkey.
And then last but not least, this one says that sex gets better, at least for women. And so I don't know if this was just a survey that was taken on women, but they're basically saying that women over 80 are more likely than younger counterparts to report a satisfying sex life. Now is that because they're not getting as much and they didn't want it in the first place? I don't know because they do say in here as well that they have less sex, but it's more satisfying.
So take that for whatever you can. But long story short, all of this embraced those years because once again, if you're not getting older, you're not here with us to enjoy it. Enjoy it. Choo-choo-choo-choo-choo.
Here's an extra little treat for you, but it's only a snippet so you'll have to catch the entire thing on YouTube. Were you aware that today is international older persons today? No, never heard of that. Wow.
Well, in honor of it, I was like, you know what? Let me call and interview my favorite older person. Wow. And talking to some of my friends, my friends have parents that are older and their parents are not as mobile as they used to and they see you and they're like, you know, your mom is all over the place.
She's going places doing things, driving and their parents have not, they don't do that sort of stuff anymore. So I wonder what is it like having to see your friends not do as much? Well, I feel lucky for one point because I did attend last year Lisa mother had 80th birthday party. This one lady came and said she was older than Lisa mama that she was 81.
So then I said, she was, I must have been 80. I was 83 then by 82 or whatever, whatever. And she said, you are, you know, like, you know, like she didn't believe my age or something like that. And she had a walker.
So I said to myself, she was, wow, I thought she was older than me, you know, but she came and it was a walker. I said to myself, I guess those years that I worked at the park, walking back and forth to work every day, probably strengthen my legs and my knees wide. I can get her own or get around better than they have, you never know and arthritis is gonna hit you or something like that. So you can't say, you know, I'm never gonna have a pain in my knee.
And I'm gonna be a son, but the truth of the matter is mama, my mother lived to be 89. And mama never used a walker. Ever lived to be 97. I never didn't use a walker.
So I said, maybe I guess I got good genes. You know, I'm not trying to make nobody feel bad, but just say it was, I guess them years when I was walking when I was younger and kept them more or less active rather than sitting down doing nothing, you know, some people sit down all the way and just look at TV. And then just flip it, did Jimmy get me sometimes? He said, oh, hold on, give me some steps or something.
Sometimes I say stuff like that. Right. You know, if I just sit down for a while and, oh, and I was so, and that's something to see how many steps I got or whatever. Cause when the, that water heater burst, when I went to bed that Wednesday night after that thing burst, I had made 10,000 steps that day.
And I had never, never, never done that before. I was surprised. I didn't know it could go up that high. I was shocked just seeing that.
So maybe just getting around and doing things, you know, keep your bones active. Cause they said that's one thing, exercise, your diet, what you eat and taking medication and stuff like you have it regularly. Cause they said you supposed to take it about the same time every day. Right.
So I guess maybe I'm just doing some of the right things I should be doing, I guess. All right. That was today's episode of Tweet Trends. I hope you enjoyed it.
To celebrate today, why not find an older person and give them a call? I'm not saying to sign some random one, get a relative or something or maybe a neighbor and just check on them, see how they're doing. Now we're still in these COVID times. So, you know, being able to go out and volunteer your time, that may not work right now.
You can always do it. You can be an advocate from a distance. So you may want to look into something like that, but you know, the easy thing, pick up your phone and call somebody. Call an older relative or an older friend, you know, doesn't have to be an elderly person.
But just let them know that you're thinking about them and that you appreciate the fact that they're there. And who knows? In the middle of the conversation, you may discover something new. You may learn something new about yourself or about them.
And you'll just be that much more better for it because think about it this way too. Once they're gone, all of that knowledge, that wisdom, any insight that they have, it goes with them. So take a moment, reach out, learn a thing or two, it's not gonna hurt you. It can only help you.
Have a great weekend and I'll see you back here on Tuesday.
