Feast of Trumpets is also known as “Rosh Hashanah”, the “head” of the year. The rabbis teach that this is when the world was created. The rabbis also teach that the binding of Isaac to the altar took place at Rosh Hashanah/Feast of Trumpets. The rabbis teach that the two horns of the ram have special significance: And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. Genesis 22:13 The right horn of the ram represents the “first trump” that was blown in Exodus 19 at the giving of the Torah at Mt Sinai. The left horn of the ram represents the “last trump”. This is why, in traditional Judaism, on the second day of Rosh Hashanah/Feast of Trumpets, Genesis 22 is read. Feast of Trumpets is associated with the “last trump” and with the resurrection of the dead: In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
