The Priesthood role transferred over from the firstborn to the Levites after the sin of the golden calf. As a result, the offices of the Melchizedek priesthood (king, priest, firstborn) were split within Jacob's family. Joseph being united with his brothers is a prophecy of the uniting of Northern Kingdom (Ephraim) with the Southern Kingdom (Judah) in the end of days.
