And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. Acts 15: 1, 5 What was the real question and debate that was being discussed from Acts 15:1,5 in dealing with the new non Jewish believers as they were coming into the faith? It was not whether to follow the Torah but HOW to follow the Torah. The rabbis wanted the new believers to come under the rabbinic authority, convert to Judaism and follow the Oral Torah of the rabbis. Paul was railing against this, and saying that is was the “circumcision of the heart” that was the weightier matter: A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
