HHMI ~ Two Houses and NT ~ Pt 19 ~ Samaritan Woman at the Well Encounters Yeshua

Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Yeshua sais unto her, Give me to drink. Then said the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that you, being a Jew, ask drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Yeshua answered and said unto her, If thou knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to thee, Give me to drink; thou would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water. John 4: 6-7, 9-10 In this session, we look at the encounter that Yeshua has with the woman at the well. Eddie gives us some background and context to this. At Mt Sinai there was a wedding between the God of Israel and the house of Jacob (including all 12 tribes). Yeshua tells the people: And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine. Exodus 19:3,5 In a marriage covenant, there is a “ketubah”. The ketubah states the terms and conditions for the marriage. The Torah is the “ketubah” between the God of Israel and his people, the house of Jacob. There are blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The curses come about for being unfaithful to the covenant terms. This is the background we need to understand for Yeshua’s conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. The woman at the well represents the Northern Kingdom. Her having multiple husbands represents the northern kingdom who went after other gods and committed spiritual adultery. Even as Yeshua reveals to the woman at the well that He is the messiah, in a deeper way, Yeshua’s mission is being shown to us: that He has come to reveal Himself to the Northern Kingdom and bring them back to Himself and to His Torah.
