HHMI ~ Yeshua From Gen to Rev ~ Pt 14 ~ Oral Torah v/s Written Torah

from Hebraic Heritage Radio Podcasts · host Eddie Chumney

And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. nd when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner. Luke 11:37-38 Why did the Pharisee marvel? The ancient Pharisees, which is now modern day Orthodox Judaism, elevates the Oral Torah ABOVE the written Torah. The authority of the rabbis is supreme. In Orthodox Judaism, the Talmud (Oral Torah) instructs that it is mandatory to wash your hands before you eat a meal with bread even if your hands don’t need washing. You can be excommunicated for not washing your hands. The Pharisees of Yeshua’s time, and the Orthodox Jews today, follow the Oral Torah/Talmud. This is not in the written Torah. That is why the Pharisee marveled. Yeshua’s reply is very telling: And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. Luke 11:39 Yeshua is going to the deeper sod level and going to the “heart” of the matter. He is not so interested in “externalities”, He looks at the heart.
