HIGH AND LOW (1963) REVIEW | THE AFTERNOON TUNE.Hello, Tune Squad! On this episode of The Afternoon Tune, Josh is joined by special guest Neal. Together, they review the classic Akira Kurosawa film High and Low. We originally meant to do this review in May for AAPI Month, but we got around to it a bit late. Also, this film has a reimagining coming soon, directed by Spike Lee.Kingo Gondo, a wealthy executive at a shoe company, is on the verge of taking full control of the company through a risky financial maneuver. However, his plans are upended when he receives a phone call from a kidnapper who claims to have abducted his son. The situation takes a shocking turn when Gondo discovers that the kidnapper has mistakenly kidnapped his chauffeur’s son instead.Despite this, the kidnapper demands a massive ransom, putting Gondo in a moral dilemma: Should he sacrifice his fortune to save a child who is not his own, or protect his financial future? As Gondo wrestles with this decision, the police launch an intense investigation to track down the kidnapper.The film is split into two distinct halves: the first is a tense, claustrophobic drama centered in Gondo's home, while the second shifts into a procedural police thriller, showcasing the detailed detective work needed to crack the case.
