High School: Murderous Soul
from Foul Play: A Historical True Crime Podcast · host Shane L. Waters, Wendy Cee, Gemma Hoskins
High school hallways whisper of a 'Murderous Soul'. This episode examines into how true crime is being used as an educational tool. A teacher in Hartwell, Georgia, has ingeniously crafted a curriculum around criminal mysteries to spark interest in World History among her students. Before the crime ties were ever introduced, these students were typical teenagers facing the usual academic pressures. The innovative teaching method not only deepens understanding of history but also prompts critical thinking about morality, justice, and human behavior. Set in the modern-day educational landscape, the case serves as proof of the transformative power of learning through unusual lenses. Examine how a high school curriculum pivoted from textbooks to true crime, reflecting a broader trend in education to engage students with real-world issues. We explore the impact of this approach on shaping young minds and discuss the ethical and practical implications involved. What this episode covers
A few months ago, Shane received an email from a high school teacher in Hartwell, Georgia, named Leanne. Leanne explained that she was using true crime to teach a Freshman and Sophomore course in World Literature in a very out-of-the-box way. She was requiring her students to investigate an unsolved local case and develop a podcast episode presenting their findings. In her email she explained she learned of Shane from his work with another high school teacher, Alex from Elizabethton, Tennessee, on the Redhead Murders case. She asked for any advice he could throw her way. Shane responded immediately, saying he and our audio engineer would travel the 11 hours down to Hartwell, Georgia from the studio in Wabash, Indiana, to help teach her students how to create a true crime podcast.Find us online.
