Highgate Senior Housing Plans Cancelled | Montpelier News

Highgate, Vermont’s ambitious plan for 30 subsidized senior apartments has been scrapped—thanks to a water supply dead end. The town and developer Cathedral Square called it off after failing to secure a public water source, a critical hurdle that also derailed hopes for a new sewer system, library, and downtown revitalization. Despite a promising start three years ago and potential state funding, regulatory roadblocks, high costs, and shifting leadership stalled the project. While the dream may be on pause, Cathedral Square remains open to revisiting if Highgate can solve the water issue—because this community desperately needs affordable housing for its aging residents.
