Highlands, NC - Despite All My Rage, I Am Still Just a Nicholas Cage

Welcome to Highlands, North Carolina! Situated in the Nantahala National Forest, the town's location was determined by the intersection point of lines drawn from Chicago to Savannah and New York to New Orleans in 1875 by Samuel Kelsey and Clinton Hutchinson.  They were looking for a location that would serve as a "great trading center and commercial crossroads."  Unfortunately the town never lived up to it's founders' hopes.  What made the town difficult to access as a trading center, is perhaps it's most appealing quality.  Situated in the Nantahala National Forest, the town is close to numerous waterfalls and the Elicott Rock Wilderness.   The Elicott Rock Wilderness is the only wilderness that straddles three states, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.   Highlands is also within close proximity to numerous hiking trails and several prime trout fishing locations.  We hope you enjoy our foray into the the mountains of our home state!Small Town News--whose headline is it, anyway? @SmallTownNewsImprov
