Welcome to the daily disciple podcast where we seek daily to be with and to become like Jesus our teacher Good morning everyone and welcome to the together on mission podcasts is Travis and it is Thursday morning I've got my Bible and my journal and my coffee and I'm in my spot and today is the day that the Lord has made and so Let's just begin a conversation with Jesus and enjoy him today And so the title of the podcast this morning is his feet or we probably should say it his feet I mean his feet seriously and that's one way to put the middle bit of this chapter John 13 that we've been meditating on and so we're gonna focus on just one person at the table with Jesus And we're gonna focus on just one person in our life And it's not the person at the table that we want to focus on and it's certainly not the person in our life that we want to focus on And it's certainly not the person who we want to serve or whose feet we want to wash Which is really two ways of saying the same thing or you know two different sides of the same coin service is But washing and foot washing is service. So let's just begin the morning by looking at the middle bit of John 13 This incredibly transformative and shocking story out of life of Jesus and his friends and so they're eating their last meal together Well, at least their last meal prior to the resurrection. They've eaten so many meals together This is what they did. This was a particularly important meal It was a fulfillment of Passover kind of meal and Jesus had just done the well according to our broken and fallen world the unthinkable Unbelievable the unimaginable he had washed their feet and he told them to go out and do likewise now Here's the question is who in your life is the most difficult to wash their feet?
Who is the most difficult to serve? Who is that one person? Maybe it's the person that's heard you most or the person that always needs to be served always always asking to be served Maybe even manipulating so that you might serve them Maybe it's the person that's ungrateful for all the service that you do or is unwilling whether they know it or not To serve you in the way that you want to be served who's the most difficult to maybe it's an enemy Maybe it's someone who's betrayed you or someone who you feel like is betraying you in In in some way You know who's the most difficult person at the table in your life to wash their feet I think we need to get our our mind around that because I believe that the Jesus had his mind around that that person even as he was Washing that person's feet his feet and that's part of the shocking and transformative power of this story And so we're gonna pick things up in verse 18 John chapter 13 verse 18 toward the end of verse 18 So Jesus said he who shared my bread has turned against me verse 21 after he had said this Jesus was troubled in spirit and he testified very truly I tell you one of you is going to betray me his disciples stare at one another a loss to know which of them One of them the disciple that Jesus loved that's John was reclining next to Jesus and then Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said to John Ask Jesus, which one he means? Bleeding back against Jesus John asked Jesus Lord who is it you mean who is going to you know betray you Jesus answered It's the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish Then dipping the piece of bread he gave it to Judas the son of Simon scary as soon as Judas took the bread Satan entered him So Jesus told Judas what you are about to do do quickly First of all, this was so incredibly difficult for Jesus.
Jesus was troubled in spirit. That's a deep deep Idea there troubled in spirit. That's beyond heaviness Sometimes we have this mistaken idea of Jesus and this mistaken understanding of Jesus that things were just really really easy for Jesus Temptation was easy, you know, he could have beaten Satan with one arm time behind his back or you know being betrayed and affect Jesus He was this kind of stoic figure, you know, or whatever sometimes we even see the cross in this way, right? It wasn't too difficult for Jesus because he knew he would rise on the third day I mean, that's a mistaken understanding of Jesus Jesus was heavy, you know, he was troubled in spirit This was so hard for him like it is for us Washing the feet of the one that's the most difficult in our lives It's it's very heavy.
Of course Peter wants to know who it is. So Peter asked John who was sitting next to Jesus Jesus, who do you mean and Jesus's answer is the one who might give this piece of bread to now This is very very interesting because what that means is you know because you pass the bread, you know around the table So you've got John on Jesus's right side and Peter is able to whisper to John And so you've got Peter John Jesus and then Jesus's answer The one who's gonna betray me is the one who is going to receive the bread from me directly Which means that Judas is on Jesus's left So you've got Peter John Jesus and Judas and John's at the right hand of Jesus Which is the place of most honor but Judas is on the left hand of Jesus Which is the place of second most I mean Jesus is very very close to Jesus They were close I mean this would have been so difficult for Jesus not only being betrayed But washing the feet of the one who he knew was going to betray him. How much love must this have taken and then John the author John Says in verse 30 and it was night and John of course as an artist and it was night It is difficult. It's heavy I mean this is maybe the most heavy thing that we can go through because we're only talking about one person at the table We're only talking about one person in our life, you know getting our hands dirty to serve the person that we least want to serve Is heavy and it was night right the one that isn't grateful for all that we do for them The one that is constantly requiring us to serve them the one that's not thankful the one that's betrayed us The one that is currently betraying us the one who has left us The one who didn't include us the one who is talking behind our back The one who's betrayed us and of course betrayal is the antithesis the opposite of service and it was night So who is that person for you and I have that person in my mind and I'm not gonna share it because maybe that person is listening to this podcast Who is that person and this is why we need the spirit of God?
This is what love is this is why it's a gape love it's Self-giving love and this is what changes relationship This is the only way relationship has changed when we're willing to wash the feet of the one that's going to betray us That means returning good for evil that means when we're treated ill or unkindly that we don't respond in kind but we respond with a different kind We we take aggression, but we don't pass it back Because we know Jesus has dealt with it. This is the only way relationships are healed This is the only way healing happens when someone tries to when someone decides to be cross shaped when someone decides to wash his feet Yeah, his feet when we're willing to serve when we're not being served or serve the one that is betraying us or serve when we know it won't be reciprocated Die to serve others That's giving away our lives his feet seriously his anybody else's feet at the table anyone's now I'm excited to watch other people's feet compared to watching his feet his feet So who is that person and maybe you see them occasionally and maybe they're in your face all the time and Maybe they don't know you have a Hurt or a problem with them or maybe they do but what does it look like to be like Jesus to wash the feet to forgive to love to be kind Of those who's not only feeder incredibly dirty because all of us all of our feet are but those that have betrayed us or are betraying us Or will betray us like Judas is about to go and do That's the self-giving love that Jesus of Nazareth modeled and then Jesus says okay Do you understand what I've done now? I want you to go and do likewise and then the world will know that you are my disciples So let's go.
