His Steps, Our Path. A Holy Week Journey: Following Jesus on the road from reproach to resurrection | Hebrews 13:5-19

from Trinity Church of Lake Nona

This Sunday, we follow Jesus—not just through waving palm branches but through the pathway of reproach, sacrifice, and onto resurrection. In His Steps, Our Path, we’ll trace five gospel-shaped steps from Hebrews 13 that guide us into Holy Week with clarity and courage. While the world seeks comfort, applause, and control, Christ invites us to contentment, cross-bearing, and continual worship. Palm Sunday wasn’t a parade of triumph but a procession into rejection—and the road to glory still runs through that same gate. Hebrews 13 gives us a practical map for discipleship shaped by the cross. We’re called to choose contentment rooted in God’s presence, cling to the unchanging Christ, carry the cross of reproach, continually offer praise and generosity, and commit ourselves to the messy, beautiful life of the church. The invitation is clear: “Let us go to Him outside the camp…”—because that’s where resurrection begins. Will you walk the road with Him? Here is our outline: The Five Steps of Following Jesus Into Holy Week Step 1: Choose Contentment (vv.5–6) Step 2: Cling to the Constant (vv.7–9) Step 3: Carry Your Cross (vv.10–14) Step 4: Continually Contribute to Worship (vv.15–16) Step 5: Commit to the Community of Grace (vv.17–19) Discussion Questions for Adults 1. What does it look like for you personally to “keep your life free from the love of money” in a world so driven by possessions? How does the promise “I will never leave you nor forsake you” reshape your sense of security? 2. Verse 8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” What are some ways you’ve seen His unchanging character help you through changing seasons in life? 3. Hebrews 13:13 invites us to go to Jesus “outside the camp.” Where in your life is Jesus calling you to step away from comfort or approval to follow Him more fully? 4. The sermon highlighted “sacrifice of praise” and “doing good and sharing” as new covenant worship. What kinds of sacrifices are most costly—but most meaningful—for you right now? 5.The Christian life is described as a journey with others (vv.17–19). How are you currently experiencing community in your walk with Christ? What makes that hard or healing? 6. Which of the five steps in this sermon (Contentment, Constancy, Cross-bearing, Continual Worship, Community) feels most needed in your life right now? What step will you take this Holy Week? ⸻ Discussion Questions for Children 1.Why do you think Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem instead of a big horse or fancy chariot? What does that tell us about the kind of King He is? 2. When Jesus says, “I will never leave you,” how does that make you feel? What are some places you feel afraid—and how can remembering that promise help? 3. The Bible says Jesus is always the same—yesterday, today, and forever. Can you think of something in your life that’s changed? How does it help to know Jesus never changes? 4. What does it mean to “carry your cross” and follow Jesus? What’s something hard you might do this week because you love Jesus? 5. What are ways we can worship Jesus besides singing? Can you think of someone you could share with or serve this week as a gift to Jesus? 6. Jesus went outside the city to die for us so we could be with God. What does that show us about His love? How do we follow Him today?
