Hischier Deal Watch: Devils Avoid Larkin Mistake

The New Jersey Devils are nearing a deal with captain Nico Hischier, likely a mid-range contract around $11-13M for several years—good news for the team, but with a cautionary tale from Dylan Larkin’s rocky negotiations with Detroit. Larkin’s frustration with the Red Wings’ lack of playoff contention ultimately led to his departure, a situation the Devils must avoid. With pressure mounting to win or at least make the playoffs consistently, Hischier’s satisfaction hinges on both the contract terms and the team’s direction. A shorter-term deal with a $11M cap hit could offer flexibility while keeping Hischier motivated to bring a championship back to New Jersey.
