E n 1870 en plena guerra con Prusia. El alcalde de un pueblo vecino Alain de Manéys conocido por todos por su generosidad, acude a la feria del pueblo cercano, Houtefaye. El pueblo solo tiene 45 personas, pero debido a la feria en el pueblo hay unas 700 personas. La guerra ha generado aún más miseria, hambre y los ánimos están agitados. Los republicanos son odiados en la zona. En el periódico sale la foto de un espía, Alain de Monéys (el alcalde de una pueblo vecino), es confundido en Houtefaye con un espía republicano de Prusia. Alain es insultado, vejado, torturado. El párroco trata de disuadirles, les convoca a la iglesia para tomar algo de vino. Poco después la masa ata Alain de Monéys en un palo, le queman vivo para luego comérselo. Adultos y niños participaron en la barbarie. Hubo personas que le acuchillaron que incluso minutos antes habían estado hablando tranquilamente con Alain de Monéys. Al día siguiente no recordaban nada y no podían creer lo que habían hecho.
