Este libro corresponde a la tercera entrega del ambicioso proyecto historiográfico Historia general de Chile –iniciado con El retorno de los dioses (Tomo I; publicado en 2000) y seguido de Los césares perdidos (Tomo II; publicado en 2004). Dueño de una voz inconfundible en el panorama de las letras chilenas, el profesor Alfredo Jocelyn-Holt traza una historia nacional en que las mismas fronteras de la nación quedan en suspenso por la libre circulación de imágenes e íconos a ambos lados del Atlántico: en este volumen en particular, la imaginación iconológica de Jocelyn-Holt revisita el escenario del valle central chileno de los siglos XVII y XVIII a partir de la afinidad entre las descripciones de la Histórica relación del reyno de Chile del jesuita Alonso de Ovalle y la pintura de Nicolas Poussin (ambos por entonces instalados en Roma). Historia en que la trayectoria cosmopolita de los criollos redescribe el paisaje nacional a partir de juegos especulares entre América y Europa, entre aquí y allá, inaugurando una persistencia clásica capaz de unir la visión de Ovalle con la arquitectura de Toesca y el palacio de la Moneda –hoy sede de gobierno en Chile.
