Carlos e a restante Família Real refugiam-se à sombra da Serra de Sintra e com eles segue a aristocracia portuguesa. Uns praticam tiro ao alvo ou natação, outros preferem a caça ou o ténis. Cascais brilha com o sol de Verão, com chapéus e vestidos elegantes, e os corpos bronzeados da elite portuguesa. Contudo, nem todos relaxam. Numa quinta ali perto, os três irmãos Pinto Basto reúnem os amigos, apresentam-lhes uma estranha bola de borracha trazida de Inglaterra e organizam o primeiro treino português de um curioso desporto internacional: o "football". O resto é História. Nos anos seguintes, a elite lisboeta ficou absolutamente viciada no novo jogo, organizando-se em equipas e até organizando campeonatos. Nasceu um club fundado por um comerciante de vinho (Porto), outro por desportistas amadores reunidos numa farmácia (Benfica) e um terceiro na quinta emprestada do Visconde de Alvalade (Sporting).
