Státní bezpečnost, nechvalně proslulá i jen pod zkratkou StB byla jedním z hlavních mocenských pilířů komunistického režimu v Československu. Podle historika Radka Schovánka mezi lety 1948 zhruba do popravy Rudolfa Slánského to byla právě Státní bezpečnost, kdo byl v zemi takřka neomezeným pánem. „Báli se jí úplně všichni, včetně komunistů i samotných příslušníků, jelikož probíhaly tvrdé boje mezi frakcemi uvnitř. Ač tehdy měla StB jen asi dva tisíce příslušníků, tak málo lidí bylo vynahrazeno naprostým terorem a nepředstavitelnou brutalitou. Ta byla tehdy standardem, neproběhlo zatčení, během něhož by nebylo použito násilí. A to se týká tisíců případů,“ říká Schovánek.
