History of agriculture in China

In this episode, we explore the history of agriculture in China, tracing its development from ancient grain cultivation through the Ming and Qing dynasties and into the modern era. We examine advances in irrigation, crop rotation, and intensive land management, as well as the dramatic changes that followed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, including collectivization, the hardships of the Great Leap Forward, and the market reforms of the 1980s. The episode also highlights the household responsibility system, which gave farmers greater incentives and helped increase agricultural production, before looking at how modern science and technology have strengthened China’s position as a major producer of rice, wheat, and specialty crops. Finally, we consider how China has pursued food self-sufficiency despite limited arable land and the demands of supporting a vast population.
